2010 National Sportsmanship Day
{Ramapo Volleyball Team}
National Sportsmanship Day was celebrated on March 3, 2010 at Woodside School! The students, teachers, and parents of Woodside School joined more than 13,000 schools nationwide (in more than 100 countries) in celebrating the 20th annual National Sportsmanship Day. National Sportsmanship Day (NSD) was developed by the Institute for International Sport to create an awareness of the issues of ethics, fair play and sportsmanship within athletics and in the broader context of society.
Activities for National Sportsmanship Day at Woodside School included an essay contest, poster contest, school-wide assembly, and a visit from the Ramapo College Men’s Volleyball Team! The assembly incorporated a slideshow where students observed characteristics of good sports from the 2010 Olympic Games. Students also shared their views on what it means to be a good sport. The Men’s Volleyball Team from Ramapo College, along with their head coach (Don Vanderbeck) and assistant coach (D.J. Pinton), discussed volleyball and demonstrated volleyball skills to the Woodside students. The team also invited students, staff, and parents to attend their conference game later that night free of charge. Woodside School was announced at the game and free t-shirts were raffled off to our students and families that attended. The collaboration between Woodside Elementary School and Ramapo College was a true testament to what sportsmanship is all about!
Check out some pictures of our visit to the Ramapo College Men's Volleyball game later that night!
