TEACHING IS ALL IN THE FAMILY FOR TWO RIVER VALE EDUCATORS

New Teachers Welcomed To The School District

RIVER VALE, NJ, OCT. 6, 2003 – When Jeanette Hampson first saw the advertisement for a new River Vale elementary school teacher, she need only look to her daughter and know it be would the right move.

After all, her daughter Julie Hampson works as a music teacher at Holdrum Middle School in the district. However, one question Jeanette Hampson thought about before even applying for the job was whether her daughter would mind having Mom work at the same place. Her daughter didn’t mind at all, she said.

“I’ve only been here two weeks and it’s a wonderful school district,” said Jeanette Hampson, a long-term substitute of Basic Skills at Woodside Elementary School. “Julie’s enthusiasm for students and her positive impression of the district encouraged me to want to come here.”

Jeanette Hampson joined about two dozen new River Vale teachers at the school district’s Meet and Greet, held recently at Roberge Elementary School on Westwood Avenue. There, new teachers had the opportunity to meet with administrators, school board officials and each other. Board of Education President Sheryl Eaton, Vice President Bert Ammerman, and Board member Oliver Fuchs officially welcomed the new educators along with the district’s three principals, several administrators and other staff.

“It’s an opportunity for board members to meet new staff and for the new staff to get to know each other. The school is a community too and we’re welcoming them into it,” Eaton said.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Frank Alvarez encouraged the new staff to share their ideas during the course of the school year.
“One of the things I think that you as teachers should know is that you are supported,” he said.

Laurie Arslanyan, a new music teacher at Roberge, said she wants students to enjoy their time in the classroom while gaining a love of music. She plans to promote “share time,” where students can sing, perform or talk about their musical interests.

Dawn Letizia, a new Basic Skills teacher at Holdrum, wants to help students improve their organization and time management skills as well as encourage them to become more independent.

This is the second year the River Vale School District has held a Meet and Greet and school officials said they hope the event becomes a district tradition every fall.
