MINUTES-
President Ammerman called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. in accordance with the Open Public Meetings Act, Chapter 231, the Laws of 1975, that public notice has been made at least 48 hours in advance, public notice was posted at the Board of Education, notice was sent to all officially designated newspapers, and notice was filed with the Township Clerk.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Mr. William Ellis, Mrs. Bettyanne McGuire, Mr. Dave Zornow,
Mr. Mike Ratner, Mr. Bert Ammerman
Mrs. Sheryl Eaton arrived at 7:02 PM.
ABSENT: Mrs. Joanne Venino
ALSO PRESENT: Dr. Frank Alvarez, Superintendent
Mr. Michael Rinderknecht, Business Administrator
The Board and members of the public saluted the flag.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Building Project:
Mrs. Bettyanne McGuire, Chairperson, reported on the ground breaking
ceremony held on March 1st. The Bid opening is set for March 22,
2002.
Buildings & Grounds
Mr. Mike Ratner, Chairperson - No Report
Curriculum/Education:
Mrs. Sheryl Eaton, Chairperson, reported on the positive information in
the Record.
Finance:
Mrs. McGuire Chairperson reported on the budget for the 2002/2003. The budget has been sent to the County for approval. Mr. Ammerman reported that he is pleased with this year’s budget as it has the lowest increase in the region in 5 years. He indicated that the board made every effort to keep the tax impact low for the taxpayers at this time. He complimented both Mr. Rinderknecht and Dr. Alvarez for their hard work with the budget process. Mr. Zornow also complimented Dr. Alvarez and Mr. Rinderknecht for an informative budget process.
Negotiations
Mrs. McGuire, Chairperson, reported that the Principals contract is in the early stages of the process.

OLD BUSINESS
Dr. Alvarez reported
on the Holdrum Celebrates Broadway play. The actors that played the phantom, of
Phantom of the Opera and Kim Cross who played Cinderella in the play Into the Woods
were present on stage with the Holdrum Middle School students. This was another
project created by Mrs. Lenore Rozensweig.
Mr. Ratner asked about
a change with the Holdrum School Graduation date.
Mrs. McGuire
reported on Jesse Zymac on his achievement winning the Northeast Region
Spelling Bee.
Mr. Ratner spoke
about his Reading Across America experience in Mrs. Wertheimer’s Kindergarten
class.
Mrs. Eaton asked
about the availability of working papers for the Holdrum Middle School students.
Discussion followed. Mr. Ammerman asked Dr. Alvarez to look into this issue.

Mr. Ellis asked if all the Valley districts voted for the same school calendar. Dr. Alvarez believed all the other districts did except for Montvale, which hasn’t voted on the calendar.

WHEREAS, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 10:4-12(b), the Board of Education of the Township of River Vale may exclude the public from that portion of a public
meeting at which the Board discusses any of the matters described at N.J.S.A. 10:4-12(b) (1)-(9);
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education shall forthwith enter into closed session to discuss matters relating to personnel; pending or anticipated contract negotiations; pending or anticipated litigation; matters with the Board Attorney covered by the attorney-client privilege. Said discussion may be disclosed to the public when the reasons for discussing and acting upon it in closed session no longer exist.
