Cooking With
Fractions
A WebQuest
for 6th Grade Mathematics
Your mom is
running late tonight and she has left you in charge of dinner. When you
get home you find a note from her saying that you should double the recipe for
the main dish. The note also says that you need to reduce the recipe for
the vegetable dish to make enough for your family of four.
Excellent! You also get to pick a recipe of your choice for dinner.
Since you've already decided to make cookies for dessert, you'll just triple
that recipe to have extras for a bake sale this weekend.
Better get busy! Good Luck!
· You will search sites and use search engines to locate recipes for side dishes and a dessert.
· You will analyze how to solve the recipe problems and apply the best solution and equation to fit the problems.
· You will describe and explain how you solved one of the recipe problems through a word processed document.
· You will design a PowerPoint or presentation
of at least 5 slides to demonstrate how to reduce and/or increase a recipe
translating the measurements into the correct units. You will show all
your original recipes and their conversions. One slide should show a
written explanation of how you converted the recipe and translated the units of
measure.
Day 1
Take Fraction quizzes at Self-Check Quizzes
Day 2 and Day 3
Solve the
four problems below by locating recipes on the websites that are given. Print
the recipes and show your conversions in lowest terms with the equivalent units
of measure. Your word processed document should be 12 points and include
graphics. A written (word processed, 12 point) explanation of how you
solved the problem should accompany one of the recipes.
Problem
#1
Main dish: PESTO
CHICKEN SPIRALS
Go To RECIPE ZAAR
Re-write the
recipe so that it makes twice as much as the original recipe. Reduce all
fractions to lowest terms. Don’t forget to convert all unit of
measurement as needed.
Problem #2
Vegetable dish: PARMESAN
BASIL VEGETABLES
Go to BETTY CROCKER and
view this recipe. Re-write this recipe so that it only makes enough for 4
servings.
Problem #3
Cookies: NESTLE TOLL HOUSE CHOCOLATE CHIP
COOKIES
Go to LAND O' LAKES and
view this cookie recipe.
Rewrite the recipe to increase it
by 3 times the serving size. Don’t forget to reduce the fractions and
convert the measurements to the best equivalent units.
Problem #4
Your choice! Choose a recipe of your own.
Go to www.foodtv.com or
www.epicurious.com:
Your recipe must contain at least
3 fractions
Re-write the recipe by cutting it
in half.
Re-write the recipe by increasing
it by 6 times the serving size.
Day 4 and Day 5
Begin working on your multi-media
or slide show presentation. Make sure you have a title page.
Include clearly written original recipes (1 recipe per slide) with the recipe
conversions. The last slide should include an explanation of how you
converted the measurements and units of measure. If you actually made a
recipe, you might want to include digital photograph of yourself cooking. Your
presentation should be well organized and adhere to the rubric. Have fun!
Day 6 and Day 7
Presentations will be saved to
your portfolio. Students will be assigned to present their final product.
