Introduction

Because you love to travel and have traveled all over the United States all of your life, you have decided to open up your own travel agency with some partners. You decide to begin creating brochures of the areas that you are most familiar with, the Northeast and Southeast regions of the United States of America. Each brochure will show the features that make that region special such as historical and famous people and places, regional foods, local activities, and of course, fun things to do.

In order for your new business to be successful, you will have to entice travelers and convince them that they will have the best trips with your new company.  You have only a few weeks to put these brochures together and convince travelers that your company is the best!

The Task

You have discovered so many amazing things about our great country, and in order to have people use your travel agency, you need to put your unique experiences to work.

Together, you and your co-workers will create a travel brochure for a group of states in either the:

Northeastern Region

New England States-- Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut.

Mid Atlantic States-- Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania. You will also include Washington, D.C.

Southeastern Region

East Coast States-- Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida.

Southern States-- Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky.

You will create a travel brochure of your region that will include at least 3 interesting places to go in each state of your region.

Your brochure should include the following:

  • Color photos and/or explanations of famous people, landmarks, natural geographical features, and recreational activities. Choices must be representative of the state or region. For example, giving a skiing location for Florida is not a good representation of the area.
  • Geography, climate, weather and travel conditions.
  • Your recommendations of important and interesting things to do and see.
  • Appropriate maps.

The Process

To accomplish the task involved, making the Travel Brochure, you'll need to go through the following steps:

1. Go to the websites of the states in your region. Read and take notes about the places you think travelers would like to see.

·        State Websites

·        InfoUSA

·        State sites

Don’t forget to find historical places, recreational places, interesting places, and important people from the area.

2. Study the climate, weather, and travel conditions of your area. You do not want to advertise a skiing vacation in June!

3. Visit the following sites to get maps.

·        http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/Around_the_World/Countries/United_States/Maps/State_and_Dependent_Area_Maps/

·        maps.com

·        nationalgeographic.com/maps

All photos use must come from Microsoft clip art, one of the above map sites, http://www.pics4learning.com/, http://classroomclipart.com, or http://mciu.org/~spjvweb/cfimages.html.

Please check the rubric repeatedly to make sure you are including everything you need.

Conclusion

Good business owners reflect often on the work that they do, and you are no different.  You want to continuously make your company better.  Here are two ways to do that.

Create a document in Microsoft Word and respond to the following prompts:

Was your brochure successful? Are there any places that you would like to have included on that you did not get to include?  Tell about them. Why didn’t you include these places? Why would you like to?

After visiting the other new travel agencies in the area, you have decided to take one of their trips to see how they compare to yours.  Which trip will you take and why?
